Supervised Climbing for Under 18s
Kids under 18 must be supervised by a competent adult unless they’ve been signed off for Unsupervised climbing by a Yonder member of staff.
No kids under 3 years old on the mats.
Supervising adults must do a family induction first to be signed off as competent.
One supervisor can supervise up to:
2 kids aged 6–17
OR 1 child aged 3–5
Supervisors must not climb at the same time as 6-17 year olds
Supervisors must not climb at all while supervising 3-5 year olds.
Supervisors also must:
Be over 18
Not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Be able to answer our safety questions (or you’ll need another induction)
Sign the appropriate documents — one form must be signed for each participating child.
Unsupervised 14–17 Year Olds
Participants aged 14–17 can climb unsupervised —but only after going through an assessment with our coaches. Here’s what’s needed:
Completion of the Unsupervised U18 Form
Booked assessment for participant. Assessments are £20 per participant.
We may approve unsupervised climbing based on:
Membership in the GB Climbing Squad
NIBAS or NICAS certificates
Participation in another climbing centre’s squad
Have demonstrated safe and responsible climbing at Yonder.
Group Sessions for Under 18s
We offer fun and safe group activities for kids, including:
Kids Term Clubs
Half-Term Clubs
Private sessions
For any of these, we’ll need a parent or guardian’s consent before the child can take part.
Guidance & Rules for Supervision
All minors under the age of 18 must be directly supervised by a responsible adult (age 18+) at all times.
The safety of the Minor and others depends on active and engaged supervision. Please adhere to the following:
Adult Supervisor Must:
Remain within the climbing area and maintain visual contact with the minor(s) at all times.
Ensure the minor(s) follows all safety rules and facility instructions.
Be attentive and not distracted (e.g., no phone calls, reading, or leaving the area).
Intervene immediately if unsafe behaviour is observed.
Limit the number of minors supervised to no more than 1 child if under 5yrs, and no more than 2 children from 6yrs and above.
Never climb at the same time as the supervised minor(s)
Adhere to the General Centre Rules as stated in the 18+ Waiver.
Minors Must:
Stay within a close reachable distance to the supervisor at all times.
Never climb above their capability to reduce the risk of uncontrolled falls.
Use proper downclimbing techniques - no jumping from the top of the wall.
Refrain from rough play, or climbing unsafely near others.
Never run in the centre, especially underneath other climbers.
Not use the gym space.
Important Notes:
If you are not the parent/guardian and the parent/guardian is not present then you may act on their behalf in loco parentis if you are over the age of 18 and have direct permission from the parent/guardian of the minor to do so. Please ensure that you have fully informed the parent/guardian of the activity that their junior will be participating in and have relayed the risks, conditions of use and house rules to them prior to confirming their consent.
If supervision is not adequate, Yonder staff may intervene and request you to stop climbing.
Repeated violations may result in a request to book an additional family induction or suspension of access.
